Grand Lake St. Marys Restoration

Tri-Moraine Audubon has contributed $1000s to restoration at Grand Lake St. Marys through donations to the Lake Improvement Association and other organizations. Grand Lake St. Marys is a large, but shallow, man-made reservoir. Its size and depth allow the lake to warm quickly in the summer, creating ideal conditions for algal blooms. Algal blooms are intensified when nutrient run-off from surrounding areas occurs. Our funds have supported the creation of ‘treatment trains’ connected to areas where water enters Grand Lake St. Marys. These treatment trains slow down the speed at which water enters the lake by diverting water into a series of filtering ponds, wetlands, and prairies which naturally remove nutrients and provide habitat for birds and butterflies.
